In December 2000, members of the European Parliament approved a Directive proposing restrictions on the sale, packaging, and marketing of cigarettes manufactured in the European Union.
Revisions include a cut in tar levels, from the current 12-milligram limit to 10-milligrams, a significant increase in the size of health warnings on cigarette packs, and a ban on terms such as "light" and "ultra light".
