Cessation-promoting Healthcare Group

This group has developed from the very effective Cessation in Pregnancy Group.  It was intended to broaden the reach of the original group and take advantage of initiatives to involve more healthcare staff in the NHS and in community health initiatives in smoking related health promotion including referral to cessation services.

The Cessation-promoting Healthcare Group (CHG) intends to be supportive of Chief Executive Letter 14

and a subsequent revision of guidance which is about to be issued; this encourages the involvement of health service staff to:

  • support a smoke-free health service and effective referral pathways to cessation services
  • should have a particular focus on cessation in pregnancy issues and the health effects of SHS exposure on young children
  • champion smoke-free homes and cars initiatives
  • raise awareness of the benefits of stopping smoking before operations and maintaining abstinence.

The expected group membership profile would include

  • cessation and health promotion staff working with pregnant women
  • cessation and health promotion staff working in secondary care settings
  • Allied Health Professionals, GP, Pharmacy and Dental Teams with a role to play in referral
  • those involved in supporting initiatives around the creation of a smoke-free health service
  • those involved in supporting smoke-free homes initiatives.

Two chairs currently support this group at present:  Anne Finnie, Specialist Midwife with NHS Lothian and Pamela Galloway, Smoking Cessation Midwife with NHS Fife.

Minutes of group meetings are held in the pass-worded members' area.
