Partnership Action on Tobacco and Health (PATH) is a partnership managed by ASH Scotland.  ASH Scotland's Training & Development (T&D) team is funded by PATH and has a broad remit to develop evidence based tobacco related training in Scotland.

The objectives of PATH's Training and Development (T&D) remit are as follows:

  • To promote best practice through evidence based training
  • To increase the quality and consistency of tobacco training in Scotland
  • To broaden the range and scope of tobacco related training in order to increase the number of people trained in tobacco issues
  • To ensure that everyone who needs tobacco related training has equal opportunity to access it
  • To enhance the professional standing of the smoking cessation specialism, through developing validation and accreditation systems
  • To improve the experience of clients attending stop-smoking services

In order to achieve the above, the T&D team carried out a mapping exercise and training needs analysis to inform the development of 'Standards for Smoking Cessation Training in Scotland' and a 'Strategy for Smoking Cessation in Scotland'. Both documents were published in 2003 and the newly updated Training Standards can be accessed through the 'Trainer's Resource' section.

Following the publication of both strategy and standards, the T&D team developed a training Approval Scheme and three academically accredited smoking cessation modules.  Please click on the relevant links to the right of this page for more information about these and other developments.
