Introduction to Data Collection and Monitoring

Objectives

The main objectives of PATH's data collection and monitoring remit are:

  • To promote good practice in data collection for smoking cessation services
  • To develop a strategy for the national monitoring of smoking cessation services
  • To support smoking cessation services with data collection, evaluation and monitoring
  • To offer guidance to smoking services on using client data in accordance with data protection and related legislation
  • To support the development of smoking cessation information and research strategies

Outputs

To achieve these objectives we have:

  • Produced a Report of Recommendations on data collection, monitoring and evaluation
  • Developed a definition of services which should be included in the National Monitoring
  • Developed a smoking cessation Minimum Dataset and accompanying guidelines for use
  • Developed guidelines on Data Protection and Freedom of Information
  • Supported NHS Scotland's Information Services Division (ISD) to develop a national smoking cessation database
