Portugal

Updated 16th January 2008

Legislation was passed on 28th June 2007 and came into force on 1st January 2008 prohibiting smoking in many enclosed public places including government buildings, offices, museums, theatres, airports, bus and train stations, shopping centres and education facilities.  Proprietors of bars, restaurants and clubs smaller than 100sqm can choose whether or not to permit smoking on their premises. If they choose to permit smoking a ventilation system must be installed and signs must be posted at the entrance. Hotels can allocate up to 40% of rooms as smoking rooms. Prisons have the option of creating separate accommodation for smokers.
