Organisation: Glasgow Caledonian University
Duration: 10 Months
Target Group: Older adults
Lead / Main contact: Professor Hazel Watson / Dr Susan Kerr
Project Profile:
This project aimed to gather information to inform the development of training/educational initiatives to encourage members of the primary care team to provide older adults with information and advice that will help them to stop smoking. The research team explored the knowledge, practice and attitudes of members of the primary care team in relation to smoking and smoking cessation interventions in later life. The views of older current and former smokers were also explored in relation to smoking, stopping smoking, smoking cessation resources and any support received from health professionals.
We are pleased to announce that the project was successful in securing one year's funding from the Tobacco and Inequalities Small Grants Fund for work entitled: Smoking Cessation in Later Life: an Evaluation of the Impact of Smoking Cessation Training, specially tailored for members of the primary care team who work with older adults.
Tobacco and Inequalities Project
ASH Scotland's Tobacco and Inequalities project has targeted its work around the theme of older adults.
A needs assessment was conducted, consisting of several components, to uncover the main issues and challenges surrounding the use of tobacco amongst this group and to identify priorities for action. As a result various pieces of work have been produced.
