Secondhand Smoke (SHS)

The 2003 Scottish Health Survey included additional questions on secondhand smoke (SHS) - also referred to as passive smoking - to gauge the levels of exposure to SHS in the Scottish population.  Below are some of the findings of the 2003 survey results, with comparisons with the 1998 results, where available.

Exposure to SHS by smokers and non-smokers

Men

  • 2003 - 33% of men were never exposed to other peoples SHS
  • 2003 - 12% of men aged 16-24 were never exposed to other peoples SHS
  • 2003 - 66% of men aged 75+ were never exposed to other peoples SHS

Women

  • 2003 - 40% of women were never exposed to other peoples SHS
  • 2003 - 12% of women aged 16-24 were never exposed to other peoples SHS
  • 2003 - 71% of women aged 75+ were never exposed to other peoples SHS

Children

Exposure to SHS at home

  • 2003 - 46% of boys aged 8-15 were exposed to SHS at home
  • 2003 - 39% of girls aged 8-15 were exposed to SHS at home

Exposure to SHS in the pub  by smokers and non-smokers

  • 2003 - 60% of men aged 16-24 were exposed to SHS in pubs
  • 2003 - 59% of women aged 16-24 were exposed to SHS in pubs

Percentage of non-smokers and smokers affected by SHS

  • 2003 - 14% of male smokers were bothered by SHS
  • 2003 - 20% of female smokers were bothered by SHS

Non-smokers exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) in the home (theirs or someone elses)

Men

  • 1998 - 31% of male non-smokers exposed to SHS in the home
  • 2003 - 24% of male non-smokers exposed to SHS in the home

Women

  • 1998 - 35% of female non-smokers exposed to SHS in the home
  • 2003 - 28% of female non-smokers exposed to SHS in the home

Non-smokers exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) at work

Men

  • 1998 - 23% of male non-smokers exposed to SHS at work
  • 2003 - 16% of male non-smokers exposed to SHS at work

Women

  • 1998 - 14% of female non-smokers exposed to SHS at work
  • 2003 - 9% of female non-smokers exposed to SHS at work
