Governor Anibal Acevedo Vila signed a law prohibiting smoking in enclosed public places on 2nd March 2006. Along with banning smoking in restaurants, bars and casinos, the law also prohibits smoking in private cars when children under 13 are present. The fine for non-compliance is $250, although doubts have been expressed over how strenously the law will be enforced. It is due to come into force in March 2007.
