A Local Tobacco Control Alliance is a coming-together of all of those organisations that have an interest in reducing and regulating tobacco use - for example, Trading Standards Officers, Environmental Health Officers, Local Authorities Officers for education or health - as well as local NHS stop-smoking services.
ASH Scotland, with funding from NHS Health Scotland, helped establish and encourage the development of Local Tobacco Control Alliances across the country. There are now over 20 such Alliances around Scotland, whose diverse membership meet to discuss and address issues of local interest or importance relating to tobacco.
The Scottish Tobacco Control Alliance (STCA), co-ordinated within ASH Scotland, continues to support the activities of Local Tobacco Control Alliances through the activities of the Tobacco Control Issues Group.
To help Local Alliances identify health-related events to which they might align themselves, the Scottish Local Alliances Calendar has been developed. The Calendar includes awareness-raising days, weeks or months that could be used to highlight tobacco control work and/or provide Alliances with opportunities to work with or target particular groups of people. Included events can all, in some way, be linked to Tobacco Control work and so there are several times throughout the year when different tobacco-related topics can be addressed.
The Calendar details the dates, name and purpose of the event, organiser and website. Also included are links to web-based support materials and some suggestions of how these events could be linked to your work.
The right-hand menu lists the pages on this site which can be used to set up and maintain a Local Tobacco Control Alliance, to assist them in becoming effective partnerships that are able to:
