"We are absolutely delighted with the first year of implementation. ASH Scotland campaigned actively with our coalition partners for nearly a decade to get legislation to control second-hand smoke. The law we now have is comprehensive and world-class, and it is delivering results.
Scotland is the first part of the UK to have introduced effective protection from tobacco smoke in enclosed public places. Wales and Northern Ireland will implement similar legislation in April, with England following in July.
I'd like to pay tribute to the commitment and dedication of all those who worked so hard to communicate the health reasons for having this law and who helped to support local communities in bringing it in smoothly."
Compliance with the law has been excellent - never less than 95% in the first nine months. A study published in Tobacco Control journal measured the air quality in 41 bars throughout Scotland during the two months leading up to the ban and again in May/June 2006 1. They found that the air quality after legislation was comparable to average outdoor air quality, with an 86% reduction in second-hand smoke exposure amongst bar workers.
