ASH Scotland welcomes discussion on cancer strategy

12 February 2008

ASH Scotland today [Tuesday 12 February] welcomed the publication of the Scottish Government’s Better Cancer Care - A Discussion document. Commenting, ASH Scotland’s Chief Executive Sheila Duffy said:

“ASH Scotland welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the debate around the Scottish Government’s cancer strategy. Smoking is a key factor in Scotland’s poor health record and a major cause of cancers, but it is something we can take action to change. 89.5% of all lung cancer deaths in Scotland are attributable to smoking. There is no doubt that by introducing effective measures to prevent our young people from starting to smoke, and by supporting smokers to quit through providing accessible cessation support and services, Scotland can make great progress in the fight against cancer and improving Scotland's public health in the future.”
