Raising the issue of smoking

The 'Raising the Issue of Smoking' training course has been developed by PATH and NHS Health Scotland.  The course uses a blended approach in order to increase the ease of accessibility for potential participants.  This approach involves a combination of e-learning (1-2 hours learning) and face-to-face training (3 hours learning) methods.

Participants will gain an awareness of the purpose, benefits and process of delivering brief advice in relation to smoking as well as knowledge around tobacco, communication skills and how to refer people to local stop-smoking services for support.

Intended participants

The training is suitable for anyone who is able to raise the issue of smoking with individuals.  This would include health care staff from primary, secondary and acute care services and workers from other sectors and wider partner agencies.  This course has been developed to support local health boards meet the Health Promoting Health Service smoking action (HPHS CEL14).  As such,  this course will initially be targeted towards staff working within secondary care.

How will it be delivered?

This course is delivered by trainers within local health board areas.  Potential local trainers include both stop-smoking specialists and generic health improvement trainers.

Trainers without expertise in tobacco will be required to attend a one-day training for trainers session delivered by ASH Scotland in order to increase their knowledge surrounding tobacco and smoking cessation.  The next dates for the training for trainers session are:

  • Thursday 20th May 2010
  • Wednesday 22nd September 2010

How do I register to become a local trainer or to attend a training for trainers course?

Please contact: PATH Training & Development Team, ASH Scotland on 0131 220 9959.
