The Crofton Award - 2010

”Young people know how best to engage with their peers and can often be some of the best communicators with adults too. I was impressed with the 2009 winners’ commitment to tackling a habit that can – and has – harmed their friends and family.”
Tom Bell, Chief Executive, REHIS

The Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland(REHIS) in partnership with ASH Scotland is delighted to invite you to apply for the Crofton Award 2010.

The Crofton Award is the only award that recognises the achievements of young people in reducing tobacco and smoking-related harm in Scotland. This unique award contributes towards the development of new ideas and innovation by and for young people themselves with prize money of £1500 to be shared between two groups - £1000 for the Crofton Award and £500 for the Crofton Award Best Newcomer.

Smoking continues to kill 13,500 people in Scotland every year, and young people have long been a target for the tobacco industry in their desire to recruit new smokers to replace those who quit or die. However, many young people today work together to challenge the might of their industry, often achieving results other organisation cannot through their enthusiasm, commitment, and ability to relate to and communicate with their peers.

The Crofton Award recognises the achievements of young people who have worked to reduce tobacco consumption in Scotland. Applicants are invited to detail what work they have done and what they would do with the £1000 prize money for a future project.

The Crofton Award Best Newcomer Award recognises that groups may have just become involved, or would like to get involved, in reducing the harm caused by smoking in their area. This award of £500 will be for the best project that has or will tackle tobacco for the first time.

If you think that your organisation or project around tobacco use or smoking may be eligible for the award, please download more information and the application forms from the links below.

The winners in 2009 have said that winning the awards has helped them feel rewarded for their hard work and increased their confidence and enthusiasm in the work they are doing.”
Sheila Duffy, Chief Executive, ASH Scotland
