ASH Scotland has created a Tobacco Profile for all Scottish Parliamentary constituencies. They provide information on smoking prevalence for adults and children at local authority level; smoking-related adult deaths, rates of tobacco related diseases, and NHS quit smoking rates at health board level; and local tobacco control alliances.
The data highlights that tobacco still needs to be tackled in Scotland if we are to reduce the impact of smoking on our public health. Smoking remains Scotland’s biggest preventable killer and ASH Scotland believes there is a need for a new comprehensive and robust tobacco control plan for Scotland which has a focus on reducing the harm caused by smoking and second-hand smoke especially in those areas where smoking rates remain high. You can find out more about the recommendations for such a strategy at Beyond Smoke-free.NB: The Scottish Household Survey Annual Report (released November 2011) presents reliable and up-to-date information on the composition, characteristics and behaviour of Scottish households at a national level including adult smoking prevalence. The SHS 2009/2010 local authority-level tables have being developed, providing comparable information at a sub-national level.
The tobacco profiles contain the following information:
