David Neilson

David Neilson, ex-smokerA frank discussion with his doctor led Glasgow man David Neilson to the door of the stop smoking services in East Glasgow.

The married father of two was told he may not live long enough to see his grandchildren grow up if he maintained his 40 a day cigarette habit.

Smoking had affected David’s health in many ways, including a hacking cough and poor circulation resulting in the need to walk with the aid of sticks.

His smoking was also having an impact on the health of his wife, as he explains, “Margaret has never smoked, but she had a bad cough which she couldn’t shake off.  When I stopped smoking Margaret’s cough also stopped.

David has now successfully been off the cigarettes for nearly a year and has thrown away the walking sticks. A combination of will power, support from the smoking cessation officers at his local clinic and that of his family have contributed to his achievement.

As well as feeling better in himself, David has noticed other benefits to stubbing out – “With the money saved from not buying cigarettes, Margaret and I have re-decorated our home and treated ourselves to an LCD television.

David still occasionally attends the stop smoking classes and is happy to share his experiences with those who are just embarking on their journey to a smoke free future!
