ASH Scotland comment on child and adolescent health research

22 March 2011

Commenting on the publication of a survey by researchers at the Child and Adolescent Health Research Unit at the University of Edinburgh showing declines in drink, drug and tobacco use among young people in Scotland, ASH Scotland chief executive Sheila Duffy commented:

"Any decline in young people smoking is welcome. This research backs up government figures which show that smoking amongst under 16s is reducing from its previously high level, and that measures to tackle youth smoking are starting to take effect. Smoking prevention is the key to reducing the harm caused by tobacco in the long term which is why investing in prevention measures is so vital.

To protect children from becoming hooked on tobacco, we need effective measures to reduce the attractiveness, availability and affordability of cigarettes to them. Covering the promotional gantry displays of cigarettes in shops is an important next step in putting tobacco out of sight and out of mind for children."
