ASH Scotland comments on new figures for quitting smoking

27 September 2011

In response to the announcement of statistics from NHS Scotland’s smoking cessation services, published today [27 September], Chief Executive of ASH Scotland, Sheila Duffy said:

“ASH Scotland welcomes these figures and the continuing success of NHS stop smoking services in transforming the lives of people across Scotland. That 89,075 individuals have been helped to free themselves from the harmful effects of tobacco highlights the wisdom of successive health ministers in choosing to invest time and money in tackling the health, economic and social costs of tobacco addiction. Yet despite recent progress tobacco remains the single largest preventable cause of death in Scotland and a major contributor to the inequality which blights our society. The Scottish Government has committed to a new tobacco control strategy, which must set out the next stages in our progress towards a tobacco-free Scotland.”
