Introduction to stop-smoking support - mental health

A one day course is also available which has a specific focus for people working within mental health settings. This course contains more detailed information than the Raising the issue of smoking with mental health service users and was developed for staff who may be required in the course of their daily duties to provide ad hoc support to patients currently going through a quit attempt. Other staff who may be interested in attending this course include those who have been identified as a ‘ward champion’ for stop-smoking support, or anyone who wishes to learn more about the provision of stop-smoking support specifically for patients within in patient mental health facilities.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will be able to :

  • give an overview of local and national stop-smoking policies including those specific to mental health and the national minimum dataset
  • understand the nature of nicotine addiction and withdrawal, and be able to assess a client’s level of dependence
  • describe the range of pharmacotherapies available and be able to help clients choose the most suitable product for them
  • understand the different elements of behaviour support , including available resources, lapse/relapse, and coping strategies
  • plan, organise and deliver specialist stop-smoking support to individuals and in groups.

(Please note the focus of this course is on information and knowledge and as a result, little time is given to skills development)
