Taking action on smoking and health
The tobacco industry often opposes new tobacco laws on the grounds that they will cause rises in the level of illicit tobacco (such as smuggled and counterfeit cigarettes). We anticipate that the introduction of standardised packaging will lead to many of the same claims.
But the truth is that illicit tobacco is falling, despite cigarette prices going up and new laws being introduced. In advance of standardised "plain" packaging coming into force, ASH Scotland has released a new report, Dodgy Cigs, detailing the way the tobacco industry has raised ill-founded concerns about illicit tobacco to oppose public health measures. A short "key points" version is also available.
Action on Smoking & Health (Scotland) (ASH Scotland) is a registered Scottish charity (SC 010412) and a company limited by guarantee(Scottish company no 141711). The registered office is 8 Frederick Street, Edinburgh EH2 2HB.
