Taking action on smoking and health
Health campaigners have welcomed new statistics from NHS National Services Scotland’s Information Services Division*, which reports a drop in the number of smoking-attributable deaths per year in Scotland from 9,915 in 2014 to 9,332 in 2017.
ASH Scotland Chief Executive, Sheila Duffy, said:
“These new figures are welcome. Because of the energy and commitment that has gone into reducing smoking rates in the past, more people in Scotland are alive to celebrate the festive season with loved ones. Smoking is the most significant threat to public health in Scotland, and it is reassuring to see that the actions taken to tackle tobacco in Scotland have resulted in more lives saved.
“Scotland is seeing progress towards the creation of a tobacco-free generation by 2034, with Scotland’s smoking rate dropping from 21% to 18% in the most recent figures, and this will continue to save lives in the future. But, there is still a lot of work to do – over 9000 people a year are still dying in Scotland because of smoking.
“ASH Scotland is supporting the implementation of the new Scottish Government tobacco action plan which was published in June 2018. Scotland must continue with bold and determined actions to reduce tobacco use, and keep working to bring down the number of deaths caused by smoking in future years.”
